Safety Corner July, 1999

Friday, July 2nd, 1999

What is Safety? Safety is proper equipment. Safety is constantly updated training. Safety is OSHA and WISHA laws. Safety is corporate commitment. Safety is attitude.

The combination of the above and adherence to the same by all employees always helps assure you of an incident free-hazard free work environment, but guess what? US WEST Washington has added another category and it’s called intimidation. Along with ever increasing job pressures, the lack of compassion for needed time off, pressure constantly exerted to return to work from illnesses or injuries, and managers with no job knowledge or people handling skills. US WEST state leaders now have a zero accident and personal injury criteria for all employees. To be honest, this isn’t a great change from past goals, but what is different is the new wrinkle of punishment by loss of pay is now being considered as a good way to instill compliance by all who serve the great leader of OZ. Working for Free

Thursday, July 1st, 1999

I guess that I am a little confused. As a union member, I have been through several contracts and two strikes, always seeking our fare share, for reasonable wages, benefits and working conditions.

So here is my dilemma. Why are some of my fellow workers giving back what we have worked so hard for? Why are some of my fellow union members working off the clock for free? Click to continue »
