Safety Corner Janurary/Feburary/March 2007

Two issues:

  1. leather gloves: EHS and the MOSHC have an agreement that leather gloves will be available in construction 2 per tech per year. Be assured more discussions on this subject will be forthcoming. Also the Regional MOSHC will be investigating the possibility of having gloves placed in the clothing catalog.
  2. storm plan: The storm/power down plan has been reviewed by EHS, the MOSHC, as well as Tim Conser, Qwest high voltage guru, and will be forthcoming as an official Engineering/Safety publication possibly for use Qwest wide. A further proposal is to establish annual mandatory management and craft review training including r/t powering up as well as safety gear inspections all to be done in the early fall.

There will also be a WISHA (DOSH) review of a complaint concerning company procedures during the last weather event. CWA will attend if asked by the state to accompany our member. More info will be forthcoming when available.

A very serious reminder: Keep your safety record clean! Follow the rules! Drive defensively! Use your PPE and your WAP at all times.

If brought in for formal reprimands ask for UNION REPRESENTATION. Letters in files, especially safety violation type, in combination with GPS problems or other C of C / production issues are causing big headaches for our people up to and including the big "T" word. Be where you are supposed to be, doing what you are supposed to be doing, following all safety policies and above all KEEP A DAILY LOG.

Please feel free to contact me, any Local safety rep or other union rep if problems arise or you just need safety help that's what we are there for.

I would like to personally say a big "Thank You" and goodbye to Pam Collins.

As all should know, Pam was Local 7804's part time day secretary and book keeper for nearly 13 years. She also answered the phones, kept the files, vacuumed, painted, etc, etc, etc. In a nut shell she was 7804's girl Friday always willing to help all members and through many leadership changes was the one constant that kept the place going.

Pam was Safety's best friend. She did a great job working with the MOSHC through typing minutes, keeping stats, and helping with the Rodeos through paperwork and handing out items on her own time.

But above all Pam was not just an employee she was a good friend always upbeat and cheerful.

Again thank you Pam for your years of dedication to our Local and its members as well.
